so funny thing happened in linguistics lecture today. the prof was explaining the difference between signs and gestures. so he demonstrated by first using some rudimentary gestures like "eating" by moving his hands toward his open mouth. he called those gestures group 1. then he showed us several gestures that he called group 2. he wanted us to compare the gestures in group 1 with the gestures in group 2. so first he made the "safe" gesture that umpires use in baseball. then he made the "you're out" gesture, also from baseball. then he flipped us off. :) it was pretty funny. the whole class burst out laughing. his point was that the basic gestures in group 1 were pretty much universal; anywhere you go in this world, moving your hands to your mouth will always mean "eating." but the gestures in group 2 were culturally oriented. sticking up your middle finger doesn't always mean "fuck you" wherever you go; in fact, the sign for "brother" in taiwan sign language is done by sticking up your middle finger.

linguistics was very interesting today. actually, it's interesting everyday. it is definitely my favorite class so far. :) anyway, time for physics homework.

oh! before i sign off, just wanted to mention that alien ant farm is coming to ucsd to perform on friday for our fall fest!! it's free for all students. ;) warren g and some other music group i've never heard of are also coming. and then incubus is going to come to ucsd in late november. their concert's not free though. it's like $23.50.

okay, well, REALLY gotta do some physics homework now. tally ho.
